Additional Information

What is bladder leakage or incontinence?

There are different types of urinary incontinence:

  • Functional incontinence: This is when someone has trouble reaching the bathroom on time because of physical conditions like arthritis, injuries or other disabilities.
  • Overflow incontinence: This happens when the amount of urine produced is more than the bladder can hold, causing leakage.
  • Stress incontinence: Leakage occurs during activities that increase pressure inside the abdomen, like coughing or sneezing.
  • Urge incontinence: People have a sudden need to urinate and cannot hold their urine long enough to get to the toilet.

What are symptoms of incontinence or bladder leakage?

The main sign of incontinence is when urine leaks out unintentionally. This could be a constant dripping of urine or occasional leakage. The reasons for the leakage can vary depending on the type of incontinence you have.

You might experience urine leakage when you:

  • Exercise
  • Cough
  • Laugh
  • Sneeze
  • Really need to go to the bathroom but can't make it there in time
  • Have to get up during the night to go to the bathroom (nocturia)

When should I see a doctor about bladder leakage?

It’s important to understand that incontinence can be treated. Some people think it’s just a normal part of getting older and cannot be helped. But if incontinence is bothering you and stopping you from doing things you like, talk to your healthcare provider. There are many different ways to treat incontinence and improve the situation.

How is bladder leakage (incontinence) diagnosed?

If you experience problems with bladder control, it is time to have a conversation with your healthcare provider. They will review your medical history and bladder control issues. It is likely they will ask you questions like:

  • How long have you been experiencing leaking?
  • Do you leak between trips to the bathroom?
  • How often does it happen?
  • How much do you leak each time?

Your answers to these questions will help your healthcare provider determine what type of incontinence you are dealing with. They will ask questions about your medications, prostate history for men, past pregnancies for women and other details about your daily health.
