Frequently Asked Questions

Types of weight loss surgery we offer

You’re unique. You deserve the procedure that will fit your specific needs. Your surgeon will carefully walk you through a variety of options and help you choose the one that’s right for you.

Gastric bypass surgery

The surgeon isolates a section of the stomach, creating a small pouch about the size of an egg, and bypasses the first part of the intestines. You become full with smaller meals, and your body absorbs fewer calories.

Gastric sleeve surgery

The surgeon removes most of the stomach and the result is a tube-shaped pouch that can hold three to six ounces of food.

Duodenal switch surgery

The surgeon reduces the size of your stomach and bypasses part of the small intestine. You feel full sooner, your body absorbs fewer calories, and the hunger signals from your stomach and intestines are reduced.

When needed, we also help patients with removal of gastric bands from previous surgeries.

Benefits of robotic-assisted surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery allows our surgeons to perform your bariatric procedure with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery — procedures performed through tiny incisions.

Robotic surgery provides more precision and better outcomes with a faster recovery.

Will my insurance cover weight-loss surgery?

While most insurance policies cover weight-loss surgery, there are exceptions. To be sure, you will need to review your health insurance coverage and/or speak with your health insurance provider.

I’ve discovered I’m not a candidate for weight-loss surgery. What can I do now?

We can still help you reach your weight-loss goals! Our clinic offers medical weight management options, including FDA-approved medications like semaglutides and tirzepatides.

What are the health outcome benefits of bariatric surgery and medication-assisted weight loss?

Sustained Weight Loss: Both methods lead to significant, lasting weight reduction, typically 20-35% of body weight.

Improved Heart Health: They lower the risk of heart disease by reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and improving blood sugar control.

Type 2 Diabetes Remission: Bariatric surgery can lead to diabetes remission; medications help improve blood sugar control.

Joint Pain Relief: Weight loss reduces joint stress, improving mobility and decreasing pain.

Better Sleep: Both can reduce sleep apnea by decreasing fat around the throat.

Improved Mental Health: Weight loss often boosts mood, body image, and self-esteem.

Lower Cancer Risk: Reduces risks of obesity-related cancers like breast and colon cancer.
