Frequently Asked Questions

What weight-loss surgery techniques do you offer?

You’re unique. You deserve the procedure that will fit your specific needs. Your surgeon will carefully walk you through a variety of options and help you choose the one that’s right for you.

Gastric bypass

Also known as roux en y gastric bypass, this procedure is considered the gold standard for weight-loss surgery. The surgeon isolates a section of the stomach, creating a small pouch about the size of an egg, and bypasses the first part of the intestines.

Sleeve gastrectomy

This is the most common weight-loss surgery procedure. It is sometimes called gastric sleeve. The surgeon removes most of the stomach, including an area that produces a hunger hormone. The result is a tube-shaped pouch that can hold three to six ounces of food.

Duodenal switch

Although it is considered a more extreme procedure than the other two options, thisis the most effective surgery for weight loss and diabetes control. The surgeon removes most of the stomach, leaving a tube-shaped pouch, and also reroutes the intestines, similar to gastric bypass.

Revisional surgery

This option is for patients who have previously had weight-loss surgery but have not experienced satisfactory weight loss or have gained back a significantamount of weight. Your surgeon will help you decide if revisional surgery is the best option for you.

Will my insurance cover weight-loss surgery?

While most insurance policies cover weight-loss surgery, there are exceptions. To be sure, you will need to review your health insurance coverage and/or speak with your health insurance provider. Because of the complexity of individual insurance policies, we are not able to provide that information.

Will there be support for my weight-loss efforts after surgery?

Absolutely! In addition to participating in ongoing follow-up with your surgeon and other healthcare professionals, we encourage you to join our free support group. The group meets online once a month, led by a licensed member of our weight management team. In addition to receiving education and support, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and encourage others in the community who are also on a weight-loss journey.

I’ve discovered I’m not a candidate for weight-loss surgery. What can I do now?

We can still help you reach your weight-loss goals! Our Medical Weight Management and Nutritional Weight Management programs are non-surgical options that are available to people of all ages, including most people who are not candidates for weight-loss surgery.

Losing weight without the right support can feel impossible.
