Understand your risk of colon cancer
When detected early, colorectal cancer is one for the most preventable and treatable cancers. Understanding your risk and knowing when you should schedule a screening can lead to early detection and stop the cancer before it can advance.
Who should be screened?
To stay ahead of cancer, it’s important to work with your provider to identify early signs of abnormalities that could become cancer. Often, the best way to do that is through routine screenings. National screening recommendations vary by age:
- Adults 45-75 years old should be routinely checked for colon cancer beginning at age 45. The most common and effective tool to screen for this cancer is a colonoscopy, done every 10 years.
- Adults 76-85 years should talk to their doctor about selective screening, considering overall health, prior screening history and patient preferences.

Additional Information
What is colorectal cancer?
Colorectal cancer is cancer in the colon and rectum that begins with pre-cancerous polyps.
What is a polyp?
Polyps are growths that form in the lining of the colon. Most colon polyps are harmless, but some can develop into colon cancer as they grow. Many times, these polyps do not cause symptoms, which is why regular screenings are so important. Polyps can be identified and removed before they become harmful.
How common is colorectal cancer?
More than 140,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States and over 90 million Americans are at risk due to age, environmental factors and family history.
How can you prevent colorectal cancer?
Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. If you are 45 or older, regular screenings are the most effective tool in prevention. These screenings identify and remove pre-cancerous polyps and prevent the development of cancer. Other lifestyle changes, including regular physical movement, avoiding cigarettes and maintaining a high fiber diet can also help in cancer prevention.
